Assessment Plus is a consortium-led project with the initial work taking place at London Metropolitan University, Liverpool Hope University and Aston University. Resources will be rolled out to at least three further institutions to trial and evaluate, including The Open University, Hull University and London Institute. The project is funded by HEFCE through phase 4 of the Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning (FDTL4).

Using assessment criteria to support student learning

Assessment Plus (A+) is a project to develop and evaluate evidence-based educational resources linked to core assessment criteria for written work. Those resources include a students' guide to assessment, workshops to promote complex skills, and a benchmarking manual for student assessment. The project is psychology-based but the focus is on generic rather than subject-specific criteria, so the project outcomes are intended to be adaptable to other disciplines.

Three main resources are being developed. Downloadable versions of the resources will be made available on this web site throughout the course of the project. If you download materials from the web site to inspect or use, please email your comments about them to us at k.harrington@londonmet.ac.uk.

1. Students' Guide to Writing for Assessment.
This book (PDF, 1001KB) is a practical, user-friendly guide to writing for assessment that includes students' experiences of assessment and feedback, students' understandings and misunderstandings of assessment criteria and students' advice to new students.
2. Assessment workshops.
Workshop protocols and materials are being developed based on previous research, the literature, and examples of good practice. They will feature a number of exercises to help students understand the meaning of assessment criteria commonly used for essays (e.g., critical evaluation, developing argument) as well as gain an awareness of how to meet these criteria in their writing.
