London Metropolitan University
The Writing Centre at London Metropolitan University has been involved in writing in the disciplines and curriculum design work since its first year of operation in 2006, and has since then collaborated with the following academic departments:
- Business
- Design
- Film Studies
- Psychology
Particularly extensive has been the collaboration with Design, which began in 2007 and which has led to substantial rewriting of the compulsory core module to make it “writing intensive”. A report on this work will be published in ADCHE (Art, Design & Communication in Higher Education) and has also led to an edited book project on widening participation in art, design and media currently being carried out by Dr Peter O'Neill, Write Now Writing Specialist, and Dr Dipti Baghat, lecturer in Design. See London Metropolitan's Department of Art, Media and Design.
Our work in this area is widely represented in a forthcoming volume on Writing in the Disciplines, co-edited by Dr Peter O'Neill, Write Now Writing Specialist, together with Dr Mary Deane of the Centre for Academic Writing at Coventry University. This book brings together a theoretical case for WiD work as well as case studies from London Metropolitan and other universities in the UK and around the world. It is under contract with Palgrave MacMillan and will be published in summer 2010.
Building on our experiences from 2006-2008, we are now implementing and evaluating a refined, sustainable model of enabling lecturers to embedded writing development opportunities within their disciplinary teaching. We are collaborating with staff in education, business, film studies, international relations and sports therapy, and will be presenting initial findings at the European Writing Centre Association conference in May 2010. A powerpoint presentation on the design and early stages of this work can be viewed on the Queen Mary, University of London's Thinking Writing website.
