Learning Development Centre (LDC) at Aston University

The LDC at Aston University is supported by the Write Now Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning initiative. The LDC offers students the opportunity to develop their academic skills in order to achieve their full potential.

Aston students can access a variety of support strands including workshops, one-to-one and small group tutorials, an email tutorial service and online study guides.

Since October 2007 the LDC has employed a number of Aston students to work in the centre as writing mentors. As students, the writing mentors are able to engage with other students in discussing the demands and expectations of academic writing. Working on a one-to-one basis with students forms the core of writing mentor work. However, the mentors also work in collaboration with the LDC Advisors in supporting academic staff with more discipline specific aspects of academic writing. Mentors are also involved in creating resources aimed at developing student engagement with the writing process. A series of Writing Mentor ‘Top Tips’ sheets, podcasts on academic writing and video diaries exploring the actual writing experience are amongst the resources developed by the mentors.
