MSc Student Assessment

Course Overview

Assessment is the most critical part of students’ experience: it determines what students actually do and has a significant impact on what they learn and how they learn.  Assessment results are also influentially related to career prospects and can have a hugely important effect on how students see themselves.

We believe that only when training and continuing professional development – in all aspects of teaching, learning and assessing – becomes accepted as normal,…a start can and should be made to bring assessment into the 21st century.’”

- Lewis Elton and Brenda Johnston, (2002) Assessment in Universities: a critical review of research, LTSN Generic Centre

The Write Now CETL is developing a modular, research-based MSc in Student Assessment that enables educators to explore the issues surrounding assessment in depth.  The flexible e-learning approach providing intermediate awards and APEL for PGCert in T&L is designed to accommodate the high workloads of academics and the award is seen as particularly appropriate for External Examiners. The programme is scheduled to start in September 2008.

Course Aims

There are a wide range of views, techniques employed and approaches to assessment in Higher Education. This course seeks to help develop the scholarship in assessment and enable HE educators to:

  • conduct research in student assessment;
  • enhance the participants’ employability in the field of learning and teaching in higher education.
