Assessment Plus

Assessment Plus is an FDTL4 project to develop and evaluate evidence-based educational resources linked to core assessment criteria for written work. These resources include a students' guide to assessment, student workshops to promote complex skills, and a staff development workshop on using assessment criteria in marking and providing feedback. The project is based in psychology, but the resources have been used in a variety of disciplines and can be adapted to suit specific contexts of use.

Ready for University: Helping A level and Access students understand university assessment criteria

The Ready for University project aims to improve student progression from further education (FE) to higher education (HE), and improve HE student retention, by improving FE students' understanding of university assessment criteria. The project is being conducted at Thames Valley University, a dual-sector university with both FE (Reading campus) and HE (Ealing campus) provision, and focuses on psychology students in both cases. The project is funded by a National Teaching Fellowship awarded to James Elander.

Student Authorship

The Student Authorship project is an initiative to develop and evaluate teaching on ‘authorship’ in psychology developed by staff at Thames Valley, London Metropolitan and Middlesex Universities. The project aims to address the growing problem of unintentional plagiarism, which occurs when students rely so heavily on their sources – websites, text books or journal articles – that they put themselves at risk of being accused of plagiarism, because such large portions of their written work consist of unoriginal material pasted from the web or copied from other sources.  Resources for talks and workshops for students as well as evaluation materials are available.

Academic Phrasebank

The Academic Phrasebank is a general resource for academic writers developed by staff at the University of Manchester. The Phrasebank aims to provide examples of some of the phraseological ‘nuts and bolts’ of writing. It was designed primarily for international students whose first language is not English. However, even if you are a native speaker of English, you may still find parts of the material helpful.

Internet Detective

Internet Detective is a free online tutorial that will help you develop Internet research skills for your university and college work developed by staff at the University of Bristol and Manchester Metropolitan University. The tutorial looks at the critical thinking required when using the Internet for research and offers practical advice on evaluating the quality of websites.
